Nyah Charles
Choral Conducting Intern
Nyah is elated to be working with the Hopewell Valley Chorus as the new Choral Conducting Scholar! An avid performer and advocate for music education, she is excited to put all that she has learned and will continue to learn into her conducting and new leadership role. Nyah considers herself to be a “forever student” - and she looks forward to learning from the chorus while they are learning from her.
Nyah is studying at The College of New Jersey, where she is pursuing her Bachelor of Music Degree with a concentration in Vocal Music Education. At TCNJ, she sings in the Treble Ensemble and Chorale. She also studies voice privately with Elizabeth Sutton. Nyah currently serves as the President of the American Choral Directors’ Association (ACDA) collegiate chapter at TCNJ, and is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) collegiate chapter. Prior to arriving at TCNJ, Nyah taught K-8 General Music in Cherry Hill, NJ, where she also founded the middle school chorus. Additionally, she served as the vocal director for the theatrical productions, where she assisted with coaching the students in healthy vocal production and acting through song. She led the elementary students (4th & 5th) through Matilda Jr. and the middle schoolers (6th-8th) through Shrek Jr!
While Nyah is still in school, she still enjoys singing as much as possible. During the past several years, she has found herself singing in groups throughout the South/Central Jersey and Philadelphia areas. Aside from having sung with the Hopewell Valley Chorus for the past couple of years, Nyah also sings with the Capital Singers of Trenton, the Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia, PhilHarmonia, the New Jersey MasterChorale, and more. She has also served as the Mezzo-Soprano section leader at Singing City Philadelphia, St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church (Philadelphia), and Ewing Covenant Presbyterian Church. When not singing in the community, Nyah is working as a Rehearsal Intern with the Trenton Children’s Chorus.
As a music educator and - of course - forever student, Nyah will continue to create a positive environment for learning. She wholeheartedly believes in encouraging creativity and providing an inclusive space for mental and intellectual growth for all musicians in the rehearsal. Nyah is ecstatic to start working with her Hopewell Valley Chorus family in her new position as the Choral Conducting Scholar, and looking forward to growing her and the chorus’s musicianship one gesture at a time.
